Polymarket Lands La Liga Deal, Faces Canada Hurdles

Key Moments

  • Polymarket has signed a multi-year exclusive partnership with La Liga for the US and Canada
  • The company faces significant operational restrictions in Canada, including a total ban in Ontario until 2027
  • Polymarket and La Liga will use new integrity monitoring technology for Spanish soccer matches

Exclusive La Liga Deal Bolsters Polymarket’s North American Sports Strategy

Polymarket has taken another major step in its sports marketing initiatives by finalizing a multi-year agreement to serve as the Official and Exclusive Prediction Market Partner of La Liga in both the US and Canada. This approach demonstrates that despite facing considerable regulatory barriers in key parts of North America, the company can still attract high-profile sports sponsorships.

Leveraging Intellectual Property and Engaging a Digital Fanbase

This partnership grants Polymarket exclusive rights to prominent La Liga intellectual property, including names, emblems, and digital assets from leading clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona, for display on its prediction market platform.

Enhancing traditional branding, the collaboration plans to deliver broadcast features, custom digital programming, and unique real-world experiences. Polymarket platform users will be able to access VIP match hospitality and virtual interactions with legendary retired La Liga players.

Boris Gartner, Chief Executive Officer at Relevant, the agency responsible for La Liga’s commercial activities, stated that young, multicultural audiences are fueling soccer’s momentum in North America: “Leagues need to go beyond conventional engagement strategies because these younger fans watch sports on numerous digital displays at once.” Shayne Coplan, founder and CEO of Polymarket, added, “the platform provides fans with a concrete means of voicing their thoughts about players, games, and seasonal results in real time.”

Strengthening a Broad Sports Partnership Portfolio

La Liga adds to Polymarket’s growing sports portfolio, which already features official partnerships with Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Hockey League (NHL), the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and social media platform X. Through these collaborations, Polymarket maintains a strong presence with North American sports fans year-round.

The new La Liga agreement also focuses on sporting integrity. The companies have initiated a sports integrity system in partnership with Palantir Technologies and TWG AI, designed to track trading activity and safeguard the fairness of Spanish soccer events.

Canadian Regulatory Challenges Remain

Despite a significant promotional drive targeting Canadian audiences, Polymarket currently faces serious restrictions on its activities in the country.

Last week, the CSA and CIRO released a joint statement reiterating that any company facilitating trades in event contracts must comply with existing securities laws. They emphasized that no prediction market is currently registered as a dealer or as an official exchange.
